Really Listening

As we look forward to our synchroblog on June 24, I thought it would be particularly appropriate to share this clip of Brian Pengelly, our Youth Specialist at New Direction. Brian highlights an essential challenge to those who hope to engage in bridging conversations.

What do you think?

Another very common mistake is that people "listen" only insofar as their looking for the next point they can disagree on or arguing. As one teacher in an active listening workshop once said, "If you're planning your next counter-argument, you're not really listening."

Of course, I feel that it's important to note that this tendency to not listen is not limited to Side A Christians, Christians in general, or the discussion of homosexuality. It's a very common human problem that can affect anyone involved in any serious dialogue.

I just felt it's important to keep that in perspective. Sometimes, I think we get so intent on looking at this particular dialogue and the trials that it overcomes that we don't always see that most of those trials are things that are much more universal.
